Our commitment to healthy, happy Maine Coons
Moons Maine Coons is a TICA registered Cattery under the prefix MoonsMaines and we are located in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. In a lovely farm house just on the outskirts of the main town, surrounded by cows and sheep.
In the home lives Lucie, Jamie and Oakley, as well as our huge family of cats, kittens and dogs. I will take you on a tour to meet our current family members as well as kittens born in our cattery. Oh, we also have some pet chickens!

Our promise to healthy cats
Our passion for breeding stemmed from very unfortunate instances of purchasing pets from the wrong people, and resulting in pets with constant issues. We have been through so much heart ache in our pet ownership, which pushed us to want better, not just for us, but for the pets who are unfortunately suffering at the hands of backyard breeders. We have always made a vow that we would put the health, happiness and wellbeing of the pets before anything else, and always stuck with this,

Diet
We are an exclusively raw fed Cattery. All our cats and kittens eat a high quality raw diet. We do not feed shop bought cat food. For a Maine Coon to thrive they require eating a high protein and high meat mix.
Snacks
Our cats regularly receive natural treats such as day old chicks, mackerels, sprats, chicken drumsticks, rabbit ears ect.
We regularly give goats milk to support calcium intake and hydration - this is a much loved drink!

Routine and Structure of our Cattery
Our queens are placed into our safe, calm and comforting birthing room roughly one to two weeks before their due date. This gives them the time to relax, nest, and prepare for the big day. We move into this room at the same time to give our girls the support they require. We are there with them for the whole duration leading up to and of birth right up until two weeks post labour which ensures mother and babies are looked after and happy.
The birthing room is equipped with two types of nesting areas; wooden nesting box with plenty of bedding, and a large oval nesting tent also with soft bedding. Both areas as well as the room are equipped with cctv to ensure safety. We have a sofa bed which is used by us at our time in the birthing room, but our girls seem to like to give birth with us on the sofa bed, which is not ideal but keeps them happy and in comfort.
Roughly 3-4 weeks after labour when the kittens begin showing interests of roaming, eating and toiletting they are moved into the kitten nursery. This is a room just across the hall in our home. The room is equipped with a water fountain, that is cleaned and refilled daily. Sleeping areas which include both a medium sized oval bed and blanket areas. Plenty of age appropriate cat trees and toys as well as wall climbing equipment for when a little bigger. The kittens remain in the nursery until they have received their first vaccination and health check.
Once the kittens have had their first vaccine we begin opening the nursery door during the day, but the door is closed with kittens inside at bed time and feeding time. The door being opened provides the kittens with chance to explore the home, other cats, dogs and humans in their own time and pace, knowing they can go back to their own safe space if they feel the need too.
When the kittens start roaming in the home, they get to meet all of our cats, dogs and visitors. We also enable families to visit at this time for bonding, if they wish. The kittens get to experience household sounds such as hoovering, washing machine, water, hair drier ect. Not only are the kittens accustomed to regular household noises but we begin training home manners, such as not taking food of the dining table during tea time ect.
Grooming practices are begun with kittens from a young age. We regularly run their coats over with a brush and comb to get them used to the feeling of being groomed. They get used to water, so much we have had kittens go to new homes and jumping into families baths! That’s right, actual water babies! Occasionally, we have trimmed kittens nails and regularly touch kittens paws so they have had early socialisation around nail clippings. Please note we DO NOT support de clawing cats/kittens!
Other pets in the home
As we are huge dogs lovers as well as cat breeders, we have 6 gorgeous dogs! Ours dogs are; Ocean, Siberian Husky. Zoe, Siberian Husky cross Border Collie. Nala, Border Collie. Willow, French Bulldog. Sage, Miniature Dachshund. Hazel, Chihuahua. All our dogs are very patient and harmless to the kittens, they all know their boundaries with them and this aids in socialising with dogs of all sizes. If a kitten is placed with a family with dogs this actually gives the kittens a head start in forming relationships with dogs. We have had many kittens go live with families with dogs, and they’ve become besties!
In our garden, we have 10 pet chickens. They provide our family with lovely fresh farm eggs which are regularly also fed to the pets. Our girls are called; Pumpkin, Berry, Chilli, Pepper, Avacado, Plum, Peach, Sugar, Flour and Pancake.
